BLACK LIVES MATTER SACRAMENTO'S PUBLIC STATEMENT REGARDING THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY FINDING THE MURDER OF MIKEL MCINTYRE JUSTIFIED

November 20, 2018

Today District Attorney Ann Marie Schubert, found the Sacramento Sheriff deputies justified in their murder of Mikel McIntyre.

This was a decision she made following the Office of Inspector General and oversight for our Sheriff department Rick Braziel, found the murder of Mikel McIntyre "excessive" and that officers had no reason to fear for their life therefore it was not justified.

Black Lives Matter Sacramento thinks that the District Attorneys response was unfortunately expected, but extremely disappointing.

According to the Sacramento Sheriff's use of force policy, this murder was absolutely not justified. There is no way you can fear for your life when the person you are chasing is 20-25 feet ahead of you, and fearfully running from you. It sounds more like deputies were reacting based on their ego and vengeance, rather than working to make sure a person suffering a crisis was detained, and got the medical attention they needed. What good is our system of due process when everyone isn't allowed to utilize it. Twenty two times police have murdered someone on our D.A.'s watch and she found every single one justified. Her relationship with law enforcement makes her unfit for her position in county government.

Black Lives Matter Sacramento, along with other local organizations, will be at the Board of Supervisors on December 4th 2018 to speak to the District Attorney and the Sheriff's Department dishonorable behavior. We will also be there to speak for Mikel McIntyre and others that have been killed by the Sacramento Sheriff department.
