Are All White People Racist?

I won't be taking too much of your time today.

I just wanted to break some things down for folks.

Let's get this definition of racism out of the way first.

According to the United Nations, racism is defined as

“any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.”

In other words...

Prejudice + Power to Oppress = Racism

Okay....so lets talk about the title of this blog.

White supremacy isn't just a nazi skin head running around using racial slurs, it is the supreme power that white people currently have over everything.

  • Government
  • Entertainment
  • Beauty standards
  • Economics
  • Housing
  • Food
  • Education
  • Land
  • Travel
  • ...the list can go on and on.

White supremacy is most commonly reflected through anti-Blackness.

Anti Blackness is the notion that the darker your hue, the less valuable you are.

Anti Blackness is the notion that the darker your hue, the less truthful you are.

Anti Blackness is the notion that the darker your hue, the less educated you are.

Anti Blackness is the notion that the darker your hue, the more criminal you are.

Anti Blackness is the notion that the darker your hue, the more violent you are.

The lighter your hue, the more privilege you hold when it comes to anti-Blackness. Even in the Black and Brown communities.

Every single culture practices anti-Blackness by way of white supremacy, even Black and Brown cultures.

We have been taught since birth. No matter how your parents raised you...society, its norms, and its stereotypes have been drilled into our minds. It's the "don't sag your pants" or the "light skinned girls are cuter" or store employees following us around because they assume we are stealing based on nothing but our skin. It effects all people of color and ALL cultures engage in it, even Brown and Black culture.

So YES!

Every single white person has to intentionally, and willingly, unlearn the racism that they have acquired since birth. It's in there and it ain't goin no where on its own.

Just like every Black and Brown person has to intentionally, and willingly, unlearn the anti-Blackness that we have been fed through our media, our beauty standards, our governments, our schools, our professionalism, our language, etc..

So stop being all defensive white folks.

You are wasting time and energy on the wrong things. Its distracting and isn't going to help get any of us free. Start taking steps to un-do what's been done...so me and my people can live more freely.
